CEESP Youth Network members attended Congress in full force and will soon provide an update on the various events. An issue that we'll be following are the protests by Gangjeong villagers against the naval base on Jeju island. Thanks to Melanie Zurba and Elaine Hsiao for organizing a space at the Just World Pavilion for young activists. Also congratulations to Caroline Seagle, who ran as regional councillor for the North America and the Caribbean region. Her experience has paved the way for future efforts by young professionals to run for regional councillor positions at the IUCN Council.

A step closer to bringing youth voices from fishing communities to the World Conservation Congress, Jeju. South Korea

Thanks to the efforts and initiative of the The International Collective of Fishworkers (ICSF), the Confederation of Artisanal Fishers of Central America (CONFEPESCA), CoopeSoliDar R.L., the artisanal fisherfolk cooperative- CoopeTárcoles R.L and the CEESP Youth Network, young fishers from Central America will participate in the upcoming Central American regional civil society consultation on FAO´s “Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries” that will take place in Nicaragua, on February 18, 2012.

The Guidelines support national, regional and international initiatives aimed at ensuring poverty alleviation and more equitable social and economic development, improving governance of fisheries, and promoting sustainable resource utilization. Fishers and fish workers worldwide fully support the process, and have pledged their participation and commitment through their civil society organizations—including the International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF), the World Forum of Fish workers and Fish Harvesters (WFF) and the World Forum of Fisher Peoples (WFFP)—and with the support of the International Planning Committee on Food Sovereignty (IPC).

The consultation process is a follow up to national consultation process, and at this meeting will gather artisanal fishing organizations from Costa Rica, Panamá, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Through the unique dedication and vision of the organizations involved, youth voices will also be represented to provide their perspectives on the role young fishers can play in marine conservation, responsible use of resources and community development. The discussions held at this meeting will pave the way towards the participation of youth at the World Conservation Congress that will be held in Jeju in September, 2012.

Funding for the participation of the young participants was provided by the Canada Research Chair in Community-based Resource Management (CRC) and Fauna and Flora International (FFI).
